GIVE UP…..all hope but have faith – Thomas Leopoard
If you don’t believe and you have lost hope or faith then follow a clear process. So, I posted this on my social media yesterday and it resonated with a lot of people. What the hell does this mean and why does it make an impact? Basically, it means you don’t believe you can anymore. This occurs so much – I would say majority of my clients start off in this mindset. There are not many people that don’t feel like this about something that they want to change – especially if they have tried before numerous times and either couldn’t do it or did do it and eventually ended right back where they started. It is so easy to fall into the realms of hopelessness. When we want something but get stuck because of past failures or fear of failing we get this sense of frustration. We feel trapped, we want it but don’t believe it’s possible.
Hope is critical for change ….
What do we do about it and how do we work on finding hope again? I explain this a lot by comparing it to being lost in a forest. Imagine you are in a forest – (just like my picture above) its dark, everything looks the same and we don’t know how we got there. We don’t know which direction to walk in to get to safety, we are lost.
You have 2 x choices – stay where you are and wait – hoping you don’t perish – Or Find a way out and hope that you don’t perish by your actions.
Both can be as scary as each other. Both come with challenges. What do you do? There have been Studies done on this and human behaviours. Three of the most common reactions dependent on what you have done in your past and where you are currently mentally physically and emotionally:
- Feel hopeless – lay down and just do nothing
- Spinning tyres – reaching out in desperation – running around without considering our current situation – become exhausted and get nowhere
- Stop – weight up everything – assess you and your location incl. strengths, weaknesses, what you have with you – how they will help you move forward and how they may hinder your progress. After weighing this up – you use the things that will help you and take 1 step at a time in 1 direction and eventually you will find a way out.
Guess which one focuses on the process. Can you recognise which one you are? Where are you at in terms of your own forest. I get it. If that’s what we have always done it is not easy to change a behaviour It is not easy to override something we have been doing our whole lives. But it is possible if you follow a clear process that considers you and everything about you. I hope this explains what I meant and why we should never quit on our goals and dreams instead change up what we do, embrace who we are, where we have been, what our challenges are and create a process. It also helps to have a coach travel on this journey with you. As always peeps
